THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Hibiki Tachibana
Series: Senki Zesshou Symphogear
Canon Point: After the conclusion of season 3
Character Age: 17
Background: Wiki Link

Personality: Hibiki Tachibana is a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve at all times and tends to carry whatever emotion she happens to be feeling at the time right on her face for all to see. Everything ranging from the irrepressible exuberance of her higher moments to the melancholy gloom of her lower ones and both extremes are definitely present in her.

At first glance she comes off as an upbeat and cheery girl with apparently nary a care in the world, always putting forward a sunny and confident demeanor, though perhaps a little dense and gullible at times, possibly due to her open and trusting mindset. For the most part she’s friendly and outgoing to people she meets although that can shift toward polite aloofness towards people who are somehow off-putting or intimidating to her in some way. All the same she’s quick to accept people and makes friends easily, or at the very least establish a pleasant enough equilibrium. Earning Hibiki Tachibana’s ire is very difficult and takes a very particular kind of monster to do so. Even her enemies can’t seem to find themselves avoiding this completely, with Hibiki almost always willing to extend a hand and an offer to end any hostilities between them and move on together.

Toward those who do become her friends, she’s extremely affectionate and loving. To put it bluntly, she’s the touchy-feely type. Whether it’s clasping hands or a leaping hug, she’s done it all and she’ll do it again though she does have an understanding of boundaries. Not everybody has the same relentless affection as she does but she’s loyal to the end nonetheless. Hibiki will go to the ends of the earth and back without fail for those she cares for.

Whether her mood is bright and dim one irreversible truth about Hibiki is how completely she cares about people. Perhaps Hibiki’s most heartfelt and closely held belief is that it’s possible for anybody to come to an understanding so long as they’re willing to try. This is perhaps the core of how Hibiki even views the idea of conflict, in that she doesn’t see people as her enemies but rather as, well, people, even if they are people with goals and wants that go against her own. Regardless, her first goal is almost always to understand this person and what they’re after.

This shouldn’t be misconstrued as total naivete or extreme pacifism however. Hibiki is more than capable and willing to fight when she has to and when it does come down to trading blows she proves to be a tenacious and unrelenting fighter, never giving up until the bitter end, even if she doesn’t actually enjoy it, especially going up against other people rather than monsters. While she will fight with her all when she must, she doesn’t do it to destroy an enemy but rather to protect the people around her and will almost always seek another way to end whatever conflict is at hand.

Going hand in hand with her tenacity in battle is the sheer determination that Hibiki will pursue her goals with. When Hibiki sets her mind on something she dives in full steam ahead to the point of recklessness and seemingly without any concern for her own well-being. This isn’t quite the case though. Having brushed terribly close with death, Hibiki is only far too aware of her own mortality and in fact it is that awareness that pushes her more than nearly anything else. Life is short and it can end suddenly. That lesson and the final words spoken to her by Kanade Amou before her sacrifice ordering her to “not give up on life” had a profound impact on her. Enough that Hibiki has resolved to live her life to the fullest as much as she can and as best as she can, and to make sure that the chance to do that is never stolen away from anybody else if she can do anything to prevent it. This, above all else, is the core influence that drives her to push on despite all obstacles, to never give up for a single second while her heart still beats in her chest.

But despite her determination and cheer she’s not unshakable. Far from it in fact. Her motivation to protect her loved ones is a great source of strength but it’s also a weakness in that she depends on their support for the strength to carry on. As long as there’s somebody counting on her she can reach down and find a nearly inexhaustible supply of strength but strip that away from her and the results can be crippling to her. Adding to this is a fear of abandonment thanks to her father’s abrupt departure while she was recovering from her injuries and the sheer venom leveled at her by the community for being the sole survivor of the Noise attack. Hibiki Tachibana cannot stand alone.

She also finds herself grappling with the implications of the kind of power she wields and the inherent contradiction of fighting to save everyone. She hates the idea of hurting others, even for the “right” reasons, and can be hesitant to wield her power against other humans. Both this conflict and her fear of losing people can cause her emotions to get the better of her and distract her and lead her into a pretty serious jam from time to time.

At her core, Hibiki is a person who cares deeply for everyone she meets and pours her heart and soul into making the world into a place where they can be happy and safe but she’s still very much a person with her own faults and failings. Still, for all that, when the chips are down there aren’t many people out there you can count on to have your back more than Hibiki Tachibana.

Powers/Abilities:

Symphogear: Primarily, Hibiki’s special abilities come from her status as an Attuned. In Hibiki’s world, an Attuned is a person with the special abilitiy to synchronize with the fragment of a Relic to create a suit of combat armor called a Symphogear. In Hibiki’s case, she’s able to attune to a fragment of Gungnir, supposedly the very same spear that Odin wielded in ancient legend. When not in use, the Gungnir is kept in the shape of a small crystal pendant that Hibiki wears around her neck. By singing a special song, Hibiki can activate it and don her Symphogear. When this happens, the Relic produces a melody that Hibiki can synchronize with by singing along.

Yes, this means Hibiki sings while she fights.

More specifically, the song is the key component necessary to draw out the Relic’s full power and maximize her combat potential by combining it with her fighting spirit. The more energized and heartfelt the song, the stronger she becomes. Unfortunately, this means she can be knocked off her game by interrupting her song or if her emotional state is unstable at the time.

While transformed, Hibiki’s strength, speed, agility and durability are all enhanced to superhuman levels and she gains access to the armor’s various abilities such as thrusters to boost her jumps and maneuver in the air. While her abilities vary somewhat depending on the strength of her song, it can be safely assumed that Hibiki can shatter solid concrete with a punch, support several hundred tons of weight and dodge and intercept bullets and punch tank shells. Her durability is enough to even survive reentry and subsequent crash-landing of the space shuttle she was riding at the time.

Anyway.

Her Symphogear also seems to provide some environmental protection as smoke from a burning building wasn’t able to hamper her ability to breathe and sing and she’s even managed both in the vacuum of space. Somehow.

In addition to the physical abilities, a Symphogear is able to generate a weapon for its wielder called an Armed Gear. Gungnir wielders typically manifest a spear but in Hibiki’s case she never managed that and instead channels that energy into her gauntlets and leg armor, allowing them to transform and shift form. She can form oversized war gauntlets, giant fists, knuckledusters, rocket boosters to increase the impact of her punches and kicks and even complex machinery to add even more force through hydraulic pistons. Her leg armor can do much the same to add force to kicks and anchor herself in place. Presumably, Hibiki could form the more standard spear weapon but much prefers to fight barehanded given her fighting style and the fact that she has no idea how to use a spear and would probably just end up hurting herself.

On top of these powers, her Gungnir has a few other tricks built in. Including two alternate forms and an ultimate attack.

Ignite Module: The first of these alternate forms utilizes a device called the Ignite Module, a fragment of the cursed Relic Dainsleff. Using the Ignite Module, Hibiki is able to channel her negative emotions into a “cursed melody” that changes her Symphogear’s form. In this form it transforms into a black color scheme and becomes much more savage and feral looking, sprouting claws and blades. In this state, Hibiki’s general combat abilities are increased dramatically though at a cost. The Ignite Module works on a time limit and can only be sustained for 999 seconds after which it deactivates her Gear entirely, potentially leaving her vulnerable in the middle of a fight. In addition, because of the energy and emotions channeled to power it Hibiki runs the risk of being overwhelmed and being forced into a mindless berserker state. Using the Ignite Module safely requires Hibiki to confront and overcome her own negative feelings.

The Ignite Module actually allows for three levels of power: Nigredo, Albedo and Rubedo each activated by the verbal command “Unsheathe” followed by clicking a small crystal device on her chest once for each level of power. Each one providing an exponential power increase but also reducing the length of the countdown similarly. The highest stage, Rubedo, uses up the Module’s power so quickly that it’s only viable for brief surges of power when desperate measures are called for.

X-Drive: The X-Drive is the most powerful form of the Symphogear and requires such immense amounts of power to access that even managing it is considered a miracle. In this form, Hibiki is capable of all her standard powers as well as unassisted flight both in and out of atmosphere and telepathy. The power she has in this state is immense, easily capable of obliterating armies and even shattering part of the moon. However, it is unlikely, perhaps even impossible to achieve alone and would generally be saved for last minute endgame content.

The Ignite Module can be used in conjunction with the X-Drive, providing similar levels of power increase.

Swan Song: Hibiki’s final move is her Swan Song and is generally a last ditch effort. Singing her Swan Song allows Hibiki to unleash a single, tremendously powerful attack by essentially overloading her Symphogear and releasing all of the gathered energy at once. The danger is that the amount of energy is too great for the Gear to shield its wielder from and almost always results in severe injury and even death. Although Hibiki has been shown to be able to safely channel a Swan Song by joining hands with and combining her energy with other wielders, alone she’ll have only her own strength to rely on. Using the Swan Song will likely at least put her out of commission for awhile.

Natural: Finally, even without her Gear Hibiki is a talented fighter and surprisingly strong and athletic for somebody her size and age, although not beyond the limits of a regular human who’s gone through intense training.

Power Nerfs (if applicable): I don’t think any are necessary. The closest abilities Hibiki has to gamebreaking are extremely difficult to access and rarely used as a result. None of them will come up in a standard thread, if they ever do. Her standard levels of power likely won’t exceed those of most mechas.

Inventory: All Hibiki will be coming in with are the clothes on her back and the crystal pendant she uses to call her Gungnir Symphogear.

Incentives: Hibiki isn’t a challenging person to motivate. The promise of a safe haven for her loved ones is enough to begin with. In addition, Hibiki is not one to turn her back on anybody in need so she’ll be right there to help when trouble arises.
